What Are The Facts, Learn New Spellings Dyslexia?

A dyslexic child may struggle to learn to read, write and spell new words. They learn best by using all their senses, this is called multi-sensory learning.

Dyslexic children can need to learn a new word up to 10 x times. Multi-sensory learning can help the child learn the same word in 10 different ways by:

Hearing
Seeing
Moving Body
Touching
Speaking
Smelling

Try 3 Activities, Just 10 minutes per day!

Help teach a dyslexic child to spell 3 new words.

This easy to follow course will help you:

Teach a dyslexic child in a dyslexia friendly way.
Use multi-sensory activities to help the child learn.
Use fun games to help the child spellings for new words.

If you can teach a child to learn just 3 new words, you will have the tools to help them learn more. The activities below are designed to help you do this.

Top Tips Course

The 3 activities take just 10 mins per day:

Aim to try all 3 activities in 1 week, what days will you do the tasks?
Do them with the child, in a quiet place with no distractions.
Do each task on different days, to stop the child becoming overwhelmed.

Remember the activities are to practise learning the words. The child may need to repeat them many times on different days. Before they can read, write and spell, all the new words.

Choose 3 new words from the list below for the child to learn, as taken from the 100 crucial word list.

You can choose to start learning just 1 word, or try to learn all 3 at once using the activities below.

Task 1 – Rule of 10 Game

Use Rule of 10 Game card

Practise spelling a new words 10 times using multi-sensory learning.

Ask the child to practise spelling the new words, using “Rule of 10”.
Ask the child if they have any other ideas for spelling the word using their body.
Then ask the child to try to write the correct spellings on a piece of paper.

Task 2 – Muscle Memory

Use Muscle Memory Card

Practise writing the words in joined-up writing, to help the child remember the spelling.

Ask the child to practise writing the new words, using joined-up writing. For example see “Muscle Memory Card”.‍
Then ask the child to trace the words in joined-up writing 5-10 times, on a piece of paper.
Ask the child to write the words without tracing them, did they spell them right?

Try using multi-sensory learning to help the child, use different coloured pens to write the words.

Task 3 Memory Tags

Use Memory Tags Card

Use memory rhymes to help the child remember the new word spellings

Ask the child to make-up a rhyme to remember how to spell the new words. For example see “Memory Tags Card”.‍

Sing or say the rhymes 5-10 times to help the child remember the word spellings. You can do this over a couple of days.

How did the course help?

At the end of the week, can the child spell the three new words?
Can they correctly spell the words out loud and write them down?
Which activity helped the child best learn the new spellings?
