Dyslexic kids learn best through multi-sensory learning. This involves using their whole body to learn by seeing, touching, and moving. When learning to spell new words, they may learn best by spelling out words with their arms to form the shapes of the letters.
Dyslexic children struggle with long-term memory. They may need to learn new information up to 10 times to remember it. Use the Rule of 10 card below to help a dyslexic child learn new word spellings. It turns learning into a fun game. Kids can spell words using their arms, legs, and even tongues to shape the words.
This card from Mooki Cards is based on the scientific research of “Multi-sensory Learning – Orton Gillingham.”

Rule of 10, dyslexia friendly learning
When using the rule of 10 card above to teach a dyslexic child new spellings, try the top tips below:
- Learn One Thing at a Time – Focus on one new word spelling. Take breaks to help the brain absorb the information.
- Have Fun Playing – Involve the whole family. Take turns shouting or drawing the word spelling. Make it a game!
- Put the Child in Charge – Give the child the card. Let them pick actions like star-jumping and shouting the word spelling.
- Get Creative – Encourage the child to invent new actions. They could wave their arms, balance on one foot, or sing the word spelling.
- Rule of 10 – It might take over 10 tries for the child to remember the word. Use the card daily or weekly for practice.
- Multi-sensory – If the child struggles, try other methods. They can paint the word spelling or make a clay model of it.
