The weekly dreaded spelling test was every Monday, for my dyslexic little girl. After practising her spelling all weekend, she would still get all the spellings wrong on her test. The teacher would tell her she needed to practise more, this would up-set her because she was trying her best.
I would read the word spelling out to my daughter and ask her to say it back. Sometimes she would spell the word correctly, then to forget how to spell the word. It was frustrating for both the child and me. She did not need to practise more, she needed instead to learn her spellings in a dyslexia friendly way.
Rule of 10 Card
The Mooki Cards contains a fun โRule of 10โ card. A dyslexic child can need to learn something up to 10 times to remember. Taught this information using multi-sensory methods. Use the card below on your phone or tablet for free!
This card is based on scientific research, “Multi-sensory Learning – Orton Gillingham”.
Rule of 10 Dyslexia Friendly Learning
- Dyslexic children struggle with long-term memory. They can need to learn new information up to 10 times to remember.
- Learning using their whole body, such as spelling words using their tongue. Makes learning something 10 times more fun and less repetitive.
- The โRule of 10โ card shows examples of multi-sensory learning. Dyslexic children learn better when they can use their whole body. They may learn better by seeing, touching or by movement.
- Practise learning just 1 piece of information at a time, such as 1 new word spelling. Allow breaks between learning for the brain to take in the new information.

Top Tips Dyslexic Mum
- Have Fun Playing – Get the whole family involved. Take turns shouting, arm drawing the word spelling, make it into a game.
- Put Child in Charge – Give the child the card, let them choose which actions they would like to do. They want to star-jump and shout the word spelling.
- Get Creative – Ask the child to think up new actions to try. Such as waving arms in the arm, balancing on one foot whilst singing the word spelling.
- Rule of 10 – It may take more than 10 times for the child to remember the word spelling. So do the card daily or weekly to help them.
- Multi-sensory – If they are still struggling to remember, try other multi-sensory methods. Such as painting the word spelling, or making a clay model of the word.
