The signs of dyslexia can be spotted in a childโs writing. A dyslexic child often misses letters or words and may have messy handwriting. All children make mistakes while learning to write, but they often improve with practice. However, a dyslexic child may need extra support and techniques to remember spellings and to improve their writing style.

Spot dyslexia kids in writing
Read how the Dyslexic Mum started to spot signs of dyslexia in her child’s writing. This is followed by a video to help you use the Spot Dyslexic Writing card above.
“My child was happy at nursery and pre-school. She loved playing, made friends, and was like the other children. Then she started school, and things changed. It became serious. She needed to learn how to read and write. This is when many parents, like me, may notice their child is a bit different. My child started to struggle in class when writing and needed extra support. I started to think, could it be dyslexia? Having clear examples of my child’s writing that showed the signs of dyslexia, helped when I talked to the teachers and asked for extra support.”
The clickable video below shows the Dyslexic Mum demonstrating what signs of dyslexia to look for in a child’s writing.
Examples of dyslexia writing
Use the list below to spot the signs of dyslexia in a child’s writing:
- Writeโs letters the wrong way round: “b instead of d”.
- Spells the same word wrong, in different ways: โdog, dgo, doog, bogโ.
- Uses upper case letters when not needed: “wAtEr”.
- Missing out letters in words or words in sentences. โT_eeโ.
- Not writing in a straight line / scribbled handwriting.
- Finds it hard to write letters by hearing instructions: “Write the letter A”.
If you spot three or more of the signs above, speak to your child’s teacher. Give them three clear examples of why you believe your child is dyslexic, ask them to help. To find out more, see the Signs of dyslexia in 5 to 10 year olds.
