Healthy Habits That Calm ADHD And Dyslexia behaviour problems

Every weekend I find myself at a kids party, packed into a room with children. After stuffing their faces with crisps and chocolate, the children are going wild. The sugar rush from the food makes them go hyper.  They start running around, having an amazing time and then the crash comes.

The room is now filled with tired children, some crying, others fighting.  It is time to say goodbye, go home and recharge. Kids parties do show what an effect junk food and tiredness can have on kids behaviour.

ADHD Type Behaviour in Dyslexia Kids

โ€ข Dyslexic kids are very sensitive to mental and physical changes.  They can start to behave in ways that seem like ADHD behaviour.  My little girl needs lots of sleep, or she will struggle to concentrate and follow instructions at school.  This affects everything including her confidence and motivation.โ€

โ€ข The dyslexic brain struggles to process and put information in the correct order.  This is why dyslexic children struggle to learn and get organised.

โ€ข Learning new information everyday at school a dyslexic child can become overwhelmed. They will then struggle with their emotions and sleep.  Mediation, yoga, hobbies such as crafts, help calm the mind and give it a chance to refocus.

โ€ข It is important to get dyslexic kids into healthy habits.  Such as eating healthy foods, doing exercise and meditation.  Learning how to look after their physical and mental health, by adopting good habits in childhood.

Tops Tips from Dyslexic Mum

When using the card, be sure to use it over and over again, so being healthy becomes a habit.

Below are ideas about how to have fun doing the “Healthy Habits” badges and how to make them part of the child’s routine. For more ideas visit “NHS Healthier Families”.

  • Diet – Eat 1 piece of fruit or a vegetable everyday.

Make this more fun, by going strawberry fruit picking. Try cooking together, make a fruit salad, or decorate a pizza with a mix of peppers, sweetcorn or pineapple.

  • Exercise – Do 10 minutes of exercise 3 times a week.

Try getting rid off any excess energy before starting school work. Do star jumps, laps of the garden, even a walk in the park helps calm a child.

  • Meditation – Calm the mind 2 times a day.

Take time out each day, in the morning and evening to refocus the childโ€™s mind.  Sit for 1-2 minutes, with eyes closed, taking slow deep breaths.

  • Create – Craft session 1 morning at weekends.

Make a card or a picture for a family member or friend.  Show the child they can be good at other things, it is not all about reading and writing.
