Practise learning word sounds
Get advice from the Dyslexic Mum about how rhyming stories helped her child learn reading:
“Kids enjoy books with rhyming words, like those by Doctor Seuss. My child loves Julia Donaldsonโs works, such as The Gruffalo and Stickman.
These stories feature rhymes in titles like ‘Room on the Broom’ and ‘Snail and the Whale.’ Children like rhyming books because they have a fun rhythm, almost like a song when read aloud. They enjoy guessing what word comes next, such as “Cat in the………”. Did you guess the word?”
Follow the tips below when playing the ‘Rhyming Tags’ game on the card above:
- Have Fun Playing: The ‘Rhyming Tags’ card turns learning into a game. Enjoy it during family time, after dinner, or on a car journey. Get the whole family involved.
- Treasure Hunt โ Instead of just saying rhyming words, add a treasure hunt. Can the child find objects that rhyme with ‘cat’? Such as a bath mat or a sports hat.
- Use Word Lists– To find more rhyming words for the game, check out the 100 words list and visit Rhyming words for kids.
