Knowing what type of dyslexia your child has can be a struggle. Understanding different types of dyslexia maybe confusing. Stick to the facts below to help you learn about learning difficulties. That can seem like another type of dyslexia.
Which Type of Dyslexia?
When you speaking to your child’s teachers or other parents about their dyslexia. They may say it sounds like the child has another type of dyslexia.
Dyslexia is a processing issue with the brain, it is a stand alone learning difficulty. There is no other type of dyslexia. The confusion is that there are similar learning difficulties. These difficulties all effect how the brain learns and processes information. Often a children with dyslexia, may share similar traits. Or have a combination of more than one learning difficulties. This is where the idea that the child may have another type of dyslexia appears.
Dyslexia Learning Disability
Learning difficulties that can appear as a type of dyslexia, are as follows:
- Dyscalculia.
- Dyspraxia
- Dysgraphia

Dyslexia Disability
Only a qualified professional such as an education psychologist can assess. What type learning difficulty a child has. This is because the other learning difficulties can be so similar. Appearing as a type of dyslexia. Only a trained professional can spot the difference. Able to provide a formal diagnosis detailing which learning difficulty the child has.
Assessments of Dyslexia
Teachers and parents often call an assessment with an education psychologist. A formal dyslexia assessment. Believing that the test is to spot which type of dyslexia the child has. This is incorrect, whilst the child maybe doing the test so it can be assessed if they have dyslexia. The test is actually to check for a range of learning difficulties. Such as dyscalculia, dyspraxia and dysgraphia. All difficulties linked to brain processing. The assessor can then make a formal diagnosis of which learning difficulty the child has.
