When I started working as a teacher in the early 2000’s, we were told that to help dyslexic children. We needed to print writing on coloured papers, using dyslexic friendly writing. Dyslexia fonts, in certain typefaces such as “Comic Sans”. Sadly in the past teachers were given very little training on how to help dyslexic children. This was the only extra help some dyslexic children would get.
Do Dyslexic Fonts Work?
Teachers, parents, carers still use coloured filters, dyslexia friendly fonts today. Yet there is no scientific evidence to prove this actually works. No evidence that printing on coloured papers or that using “comic sans”. Makes any difference to a dyslexic child’s ability to read.
Despite this, dyslexia companies still sell thousands of coloured filters to schools. Some teachers say that changing the font on writing really helps dyslexic children. I believe the best approach is. If something is helping a dyslexic child to read better, keep doing it.
